Maine Windjammers and Other Sailing Schooners
Schooner Mary Day

Here is a picture of the schooner Mary Day. It is one of several sailing schooners based in the Rockland/Camden, Maine area that offer passenger cruises of varying lengths.

The Mary Day, built in 1962, is new compared to several other members of the Maine schooner fleet and, unlike most others, was built especially for passengers.

Schooner Heritage

Youngest of the schooners in the Maine passenger fleet is the schooner, Heritage, having been launched in 1983.

Many of the schooners in this fleet are much older and some are, in fact, listed in the National Historical Register for their historical significance. Many have a mixed and varied history and are lovingly preserved by their owners as examples of a period when sailing schooners were the major cargo carriers along the New England coast.

Spirit of Massachusetts

This is the schooner Spirit of Massachusetts, not part of the Maine fleet of sailing schooners, but operating out of Boston, MA. It participated in the Great Schooner Race off the Maine coast in July 1994.

While also of recent construction, built in Charlestown Navy Yard in 1984, Spirit of Massachusetts is modeled on the lines of Fredonia, famous Gloucester fishing schooner of 1889 vintage.

The book, "Windjammer Watching on the Coast of Maine" by Virginia L. Thorndike and published by Down East Books is an excellent source of more information on these and other traditional sailing vessels still in active service.
