| USS Nautilus (SSN571) |
| Up to the time when she was decommissioned in 1980, the USS Nautilus established many firsts. The USS Nautilus was the first nuclear-powered submarine ever built. Commissioned September 30, 1954, Nautilus was the first true submarine since her nuclear power plant enabled her to remain submerged for months at a time. Today, Nautilus is open to the public at the Historic Ship Nautilus & Submarine Force Museum at the U. S. Navy Submarine Base in Groton, CT. Nautilus is a National Historic Landmark and Connecticut's State Ship. |
